Our Approach

HBC provides the most advanced equestrian design services available to help make your facilities examples of green leadership in the equestrian community.  We design facilities that deliver practical, safe, and attractive spaces for barns, arenas, courses, bridle trails, and pastures.

As responsible stewards, HBC employs Low Impact Design (LID), Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and sustainable design to assist Equine Owners and Ranches in managing stormwater runoff on their farms, pastures, and stables.

These stormwater techniques are the most responsible and comprehensive systems that mimic nature, while controlling and processing animal and storm runoff that could otherwise adversely affect, or even destroy surrounding streams, waterways and wildlife.  HBC’s Equestrian Planning is the best management practice to embrace such an important mission.  Rather than relying on conventional ditching or falling victim to heavily sloping grades, our techniques blend with the surrounding landscape to provide long term solutions. By managing runoff close to its source, LID can enhance the local environment, protect public and equine health, and improve overall livability.  Such practices economically save our clients money (from piping, drains, etc…), limits liabilities, and have reasonable construction costs.  To further reduce a facility’s environmental footprint (impact), HBC employs their LEED accredited professionals to create a green thread, from buildings to pasture.

Our Team

Rene Budzisch - Equestrian Design Consultant

As a design consultant for HBC, Rene Budzisch applies his extensive knowledge in the equestrian field to help us create the best design solution for projects.  He competed 10 years professionally at show jumping (including Grand Prix) and dressage (up to 4th level) and spent one year training with Herbert Bloecker in Germany at Holsteiner Verband.  Not only does Rene know the equestrian sport, but he has proved his devotion to the horse itself with his impressive background in horse care.  Rene was the stallion barn manager for Infinity sport horse for 7 years, he is a fully trained farrier, managed a foaling barn, and has prepared stallions for hundred day test.

Rene has managed and owned facilities worldwide including Toronto, Canada, Elmshorn, Germany, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Gainesville and West Palm Beach, Florida, West Chester, Pennsylvania, and Charlotte, North Carolina.  Rene is familiar with training and lesson environment as well as having operated sales barns.

Maud Kelley - Equestrian Land Planner & Designer,
Principal

Maud has had a love of horses since childhood.  This love evolved into having a horse of her own in her adult life, training as a hunter/jumper and enjoying trail riding and hunter paces.

As a horse owner and landscape designer, Maud noticed a lack of planning in facility layout and best management practices in pastures, from small facilities to large.  She approached Henry and Heather Burkert, two principals of the firm, about integrating HBC’s knowledge of LEED and LID practices to equestrian planning and design.  With the support of the entire firm, Maud is now a part of equine life far beyond what she imagined; impacting both the health, safety, and welfare of horses and the sustainability of the environment through design.
